Overview:

Action for Boston Community Development is a nonprofit human services organization that each year provides more than 100,000 low income residents in the Greater Boston region with the tools and resources needed to transition from poverty to stability and from stability to success. The Housing Counseling program provides the information, assistance and skills clients need to maintain their household or access resources to help find more affordable housing. 

Duties include: 

  • Responsible for providing general and specialized housing assistance and support for the Housing Department
  • Triage, assist and provide housing related information, guidance and referrals
  • Conducts intake and assessments on clients referred to, and/or walking into, the housing department
  • Point of contact for housing related inquiries for: internal/ external departments, community agencies, groups, schools, hospitals and like social service entities
  • Assist clients with the application process, obtaining housing and other housing resources
  • Runs a monthly housing information/search group
  • Schedules community training and outreach activities for ABCD neighborhood sites, hospitals, schools and community centers requesting housing search guidance and training
  • Assist clients with housing search by providing applications and other resources
  • Processes rental assistance request for review and approval
  • Refers clients to resources to help sustain housing i.e.: childcare, education, job-training, financial literacy, fuel assistance, weatherization, food, furniture, clothing, transportation, legal referrals, medical care, counseling, parenting skills and other services in their community which impact on their ability to obtain or maintain permanent housing
  • Maintains weekly duty log and provides weekly and month reports and participates in weekly case reviews
  • May supervise interns and or volunteers
  • Perform other related duties as assigned from time to time

Job Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, with up to 12 months of experience with thorough knowledge of housing/housing search, tenant’s rights, housing subsidies and housing law required
  • Possess Housing Counselor Certification or be willing to become Housing Counseling certified with 6 months of employment required
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work sensitively and effectively with people of diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Ability to handle a variety of assignments and have the flexibility to work some evenings if necessary
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license
  • Bilingual skills preferred
