Action for Boston Community Development is a nonprofit human services organization that each year provides more than 100,000 low income residents in the Greater Boston region with the tools and resources needed to transition from poverty to stability and from stability to success. 

The School Adjustment Case Manager works with students at University High School (UHS). UHS provides creative opportunities that help you discover — or rediscover — a love of learning, catch up on your coursework, and graduate from high school. Our innovative classrooms, internships, and experiences promote relevant, hands-on learning that help you prepare for college or whatever next step leads toward your goals.

Duties include:

  • Responsible for providing student participants with mental health, academic, career and other life skills counseling, support services and clinical referrals where appropriate, in order to support them in achieving program goals
  • Work with each student to assess his/her strengths, and develop and maintain an Individual Service Strategy for achieving program goals
  • Apply clinical techniques such as motivational interviewing to facilitate the student’s awareness of his/her strengths, weaknesses, and motivation
  • Conduct family counseling meetings and home visits
  • Assess the student’s social and emotional stability, coordinate benefits and support services from ABCD or other agencies, and accompany him/her when necessary
  • Consult with teachers to provide planning and support for behavioral and academic interventions
  • Monitor, track and maintain student attendance by making daily attendance calls and working with other staff on appropriate strategies and policy changes to improve attendance rate
  • Maintain compliance and input updated records of student demographics, program activities, class grades and attendance, and case management notes into the school’s database, the MOSES database and the Boston Public Schools (BPS) SIS database
  • Perform other related duties as assigned from time to time

Job Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in education, social work or related field required
  • DESE School Adjustment license strongly preferred. LCSW or LMHC preferred
  • Minimum of one to three years related experience working with urban youth required
  • Must have a background in social work and/or mental health counseling
  • Professional experience in school counseling or school social work preferred
  • Must attend all staff meetings
  • Demonstrated familiarity with mindfulness school-based practices of stress management, emotion regulation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong desire to work both directly with students as well as school staff
  • Demonstrated unwavering belief in urban youth and their potential
  • Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
  • Bilingual skills preferred
