Action for Boston Community Development is a nonprofit human services organization that each year provides more than 100,000 low income residents in the Greater Boston region with the tools and resources needed to transition from poverty to stability and from stability to success. 

First Steps into Early Education Careers (First Steps) is designed to recruit, train, and develop job placements for adults who are interested in careers in the field of early education. There is a strong demand for teachers in the field of early education, and there is a well-defined career path that enables motivated candidates to advance in the field.

Duties include:

  • Responsible for developing and expanding new early education career training programs; coordinating all program operations; overseeing record-keeping; reporting to funders; and ensuring that all funding and reporting requirements are met. 
  • Establish strategic partnerships with key peers in Greater Boston area childcare providers.
  • Under the supervision of the Director of Workforce Development & Alternative Education, implement the First Steps Program, and will develop, plan, and manage alternative and/or expansive efforts in the field of early childhood education career skills training programs.
  • Coordinate the delivery of educational curriculum to Program participants, ensuring that participant educational goals are met. In furtherance of this objective, the Program Director may work with educational instructors on the development of schedules and lesson plans, assist instructors with the development of educational approaches, and facilitate the development of special training efforts.
  • Assist instructors with techniques for presentation and other professional issues as they arise.  Assume instructing responsibilities when necessary.
  • Ensure that participant services are accessible, participant-centered, and timely. Interview prospective program participants and assess aptitude and willingness to complete the program and transition into the early education workforce.  Ensure successful program completion with competency-based results.
  • Hire, train, support, direct, and manage support services navigators as well as career coaches, case managers, and other staff responsible for delivering training and support services to participants. 
  • Work with program staff to ensure the quality of the intake and assessment process, as well as the accuracy of student records and progress reports.
  • Monitor program performance and implement changes, as necessary, to ensure high quality service and positive participant outcomes.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure program goals are aligned a and achieved.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned from time to time.

Job Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or a related field is preferred, but not required.
  • A minimum of three to five years of experience in educational and/or workforce development programming.  
  • Excellent creative and entrepreneurial talents, along with a willingness to take risks and develop new initiatives.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as strong organizational, planning, and time management skills. 
  • Proven experience in operating adult training programs. 
  • Ability to work with a diverse customer base, knowledge of Boston’s neighborhoods, and familiarity with local early childhood education sector.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspire, educate, and lead staff.  
  • Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
