Overview:
Action for Boston Community Development is a nonprofit human services organization that each year provides more than 100,000 low income residents in the Greater Boston region with the tools and resources needed to transition from poverty to stability and from stability to success. 
 

Duties Include:

  • Work with the Director and Deputy Director to implement a seamless and coordinated housing counseling program for both Boston and Mystic Valley Housing Departments.
  • Maintain Housing and Urban Development (HUD) certification compliance, including: data quality in the HUD data systems.
  • Coordinate a client centered approach to assure clients are receiving optimal assistance with their service needs.
  • Maintain a caseload of at least 20 client a month needing assistance with addressing barriers to sustaining or obtaining housing; maintain files on another 20 with less barriers but still in need of assistance (not exceeding 40 multi-level cases a month). 
  • Triage, assist and provide housing related information, guidance and referrals.
  • Conduct and assist in developing a unified intake & assessments system on clients referred and or walking into the housing department.
  • Process rental assistance request for review and approval.
  • Refer clients to resources to help sustain housing i.e.: Childcare, education, job-training, financial literacy, fuel assistance, weatherization, food, furniture, clothing, transportation, legal referrals, medical care, counseling, parenting skills and other services in their community which impact on their ability to obtain or maintain permanent housing.
  • Point of contact for housing related inquiries for: internal/ external departments, community agencies, groups, schools, hospitals and like social service entities.
  • Assist clients with the application process, obtaining housing and other housing resources.
  • Facilitate monthly housing information/search groups.
  • Initiate/coordinate outreach activities to market housing counseling programs by sending letters, flyers and planning workshops, seminars in targeted areas.
  • Coordinate meetings with internal departments to assure communication and transparency of efforts.
  • Maintain resource database for housing counseling unit which includes both sources for rental/mortgage arrearage assistance.
  • Coordinate and participates in weekly case reviews.
  • Provide weekly and monthly reports.
  • Supervise interns/volunteers as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned from time to time.
     

Job Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent and one to three years of experience required.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license. 
  • Display thorough knowledge of housing/housing search, tenant’s rights, housing subsidies and housing law.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to handle a variety of assignments and have the flexibility to work some evenings when necessary.
  • Bilingual skills in Spanish and/or Haitian Creole is preferred. 
  • Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
