Overview:

Action for Boston Community Development is a nonprofit human services organization that each year provides more than 100,000 low income residents in the Greater Boston region with the tools and resources needed to transition from poverty to stability and from stability to success. 

ABCD Head Start & Children's Services is a family development program serving children from birth to age five, as well as pregnant women. Part of a highly successful national program, we provide comprehensive services to the whole family and foster a safe, creative learning environment to support children in school readiness and their social-emotional development. We are looking for dedicated individuals who want to make a meaningful impact on the communities we serve!

Duties Include:

  • Responsible for providing training, support and guidance to program staff and parents on the mainstreaming and provision of services to children with disabilities and their families and the social/emotional wellbeing for children and families
  • Collaborate with all component staff, parents and staff from community agencies, early intervention programs and public schools to ensure that children with disabilities are recruited, interdisciplinary program planning occurs, and appropriate referrals, screening, assessment, diagnostic services and placements are provided
  • Provide ongoing consultation and support to parents and staff regarding support networks for families before and after Head Start/Early Head Start and advocacy skill development
  • Observe and assess the appropriateness of programs outside of Head Start or Early Head Start for possible placement or referral following the evaluation of a child
  • Facilitate the delivery of therapeutic services
  • Monitor and track follow-up needs, developmental screenings, curriculum system, and child outcomes
  • Perform other related duties as assigned from time to time

Job Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field, and a minimum of one course in special education/early childhood mental health required
  • Two years of experience providing care or teaching children with special needs or disabilities may be counted towards special education coursework
  • Minimum of nine months of experience providing care to or teaching children with special needs or disabilities also required
  • Thorough knowledge of infant through preschool special education as well as their social/emotional wellbeing and its relationship to child development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of typical and atypical development with ability to recognize the symptoms of a development issue
  • Bilingual skills and the ability to translate as necessary preferred
  • Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds
